Supporting Students

Our teaching and administrative staff have substantial experience in working with young people. They understand the need for a learning program that is hands on and teaches real skills in an interesting and interactive way. All teachers in the VCAL program have professional work backgrounds to ensure students learn only from experienced professionals. Students are supported in all aspects of their educational care, including welfare care.

WHY Prahran Community Learning Centre?

Each person learns in his or her own way. The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is an alternative to secondary school and provides a more individualised and engaged study option for students who have disengaged from mainstream education.

PCLC is not like a traditional secondary school. Smaller class sizes and a more relaxed atmosphere allow students and teachers to build positive relationships. Student mentors, coordinators and administration staff are always accessible and approachable, encouraging students to develop both in their skills and well-being.

While the aim of most students who enrol with PCLC is to complete an equivalent year 11 or 12 certificate, our program focuses on more than just academics. We aim to develop our students into confident and highly employable young adults by encouraging them to connect with learning that is relevant to the real world. Our curriculum is designed to promote personal growth in young people through not only numeracy and literacy skills, but an emphasis on life-long skills such as communication, teamwork and responsibility. We understand and promote the importance of personal independence and real world knowledge in order to gain, and more importantly, keep a job.

PCLC encourages an environment where all students feel connected, safe and relaxed. The are no uniforms, and all staff are addressed by their first name. We nurture and respect all individual withing our school community, and maintain zero tolerance of discrimination and bullying in all forms. Our aim is to identify and elevate each student’s individual strengths through listening and encouragement, and to recognise and celebrate the attributes that make each student unique. Through mutual respect, PCLC is a place where students can bring out the best in themselves and each other.

Occasional Child Care

PCLC offers students access to onsite childcare whilst enrolled in our education programs. This allows young parents the ability to re-engage or continue their education whilst safe in the knowledge that their child/children are being cared for.
